BECOME AN MCEA BUILDING REPRESENTATIVE
MCEA Building Representatives (“Building Reps”) are worksite leaders within our union who have been democratically elected by their colleagues. Building Reps play many different roles within our union at nearly 200 MCPS worksites: they are organizers, communicators, and problem-solvers.
Below are examples of the roles that Building Representatives play at their worksites:
- Addressing problems arising from our work as educators in their school/worksite
- Organizing, advocating, and representing members’ collective interests and needs as education employees at their worksite
- Engaging members, including mobilizing them, in action to improve our working conditions and our students’ learning conditions
Building Representative Responsibilities
- Attend monthly MCEA Representative Assembly (alternates between in-person and virtual)
- Vote to determine whether a local candidate may receive MCEA’s Apple Ballot endorsement
- Vote to approve MCEA’s annual budget
- Make recommendations to MCEA’s general membership for the ratification of any proposed collective bargaining agreements between MCEA and Montgomery County Board of Education

Building Representative Elections
Every year, worksites must conduct new elections to elect building reps for the school year. Elections are held in the fall (beginning in the 2026-2027 school year). Each worksite is entitled to at least one MCEA Building Representative and additional Reps based on 1 for every 15 MCEA members (or a major fraction thereof).
