2025 Budget Campaign Social Media Storm

 Social Media Toolkit

Calling on County Executive Marc Elrich to Fully Fund the Budget

SOCIAL MEDIA STORM DATES

Monday, March 10, and Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

WHAT IS A SOCIAL MEDIA STORM?

A social media storm is when an individual confronts a spike in social media activity, traditionally on Twitter or X. Social media storms do not have to be inherently negative, but as the name implies, storms are usually viewed as something individuals have to weather. By working collectively and tagging County Executive Elrich on the same days, we can create a “storm” on social media.

WHY DO WE WANT TO USE A SOCIAL MEDIA STORM?

We want to use a social media storm to publicly highlight the need for County Executive Marc Elrich to propose a school budget that fully funds our schools, and specifically, aligns with the operating budget recently adopted by the Board of Education.

OVERVIEW

On Friday, March 14, County Executive Marc Elrich will release his proposed budget for the County, which includes a proposed operating budget for Montgomery County Public Schools.

County Executive Elrich has long been an ally and backer of students, schools, and educators, and we believe that his proposed school budget will align with the Board of Education’s recently adopted budget.

We want to show County Executive Elrich – and other elected officials, like the County Council – that we believe his budget will support students and schools.

We want to show our faith in County Executive Elrich by flooding social media—Instagram, Facebook, Bluesky, and X/Twitter—with messages that encourage the County Executive to release a budget that fully funds our schools.

MESSAGE GUIDANCE

We do not want to attack or be aggressive with County Executive Elrich on social media. As mentioned earlier, the County Executive has long stood with us and had our backs.

We want to demonstrate that we support him in proposing a budget that fully funds our schools. As you can imagine, not all elected officials support fully funding our schools, and for our elected allies, it’s important to publicly show our support.
