Teri Kanu has been a proud educator and union member for over 10 years. Prior to moving to Maryland, Teri taught in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she held a variety of positions, including kindergarten, second grade, and fifth grade classroom teacher, computer science teacher, and special education teacher. In 2020, Teri took a leap of faith and a position in Montgomery County Public Schools, where she taught special education (Home School Model) split between Harmony Hills ES and Piney Branch ES, before going full-time at Piney Branch. She was briefly at Cannon Road ES before transitioning to Takoma Park ES, where she currently teaches special education (HSM).
Throughout her career, Teri has been a dedicated advocate for public education and the rights of students, educators, and education support professionals. She strongly believes that public education and public schools are the foundations of a healthy society and thriving democracy. In service to that belief, she has supported her colleagues as a building representative and elected faculty representative.
When she’s not teaching or advocating, Teri enjoys spending time with her husband, kids, pets, and friends. Her hobbies and interests include live music, theater, amusement parks, roller derby, and gaming.
